The Bayero University, Kano, BUK, has begun the production of parboiled rice to meet the demand of both the university community and the general public.

Speaking with Kano Focus, the BUK’s head of Agricultural Economics and Extension, Ali Abdullahi said that at present, the university’s mill has the capacity to process one ton of paddy rice per day.

Mr Abdullahi, however, said by January, 2020, the mill would expand its production capacity to meet the needs of open markets.

According to him, the initiative is geared towards bridging the gap between ‘gown and town’, as academic researches and projects are put into practice for the good of the society.

Recall that the university had recently commissioned a training and research farm anchored by its’s Centre for Dryland Agriculture, CDA, with $5m grant from the World Bank.

The farm, which is the first of its kind in any Nigerian tertiary institutions, would work with relevant Agric key players to develop and mount training, research and outreach programmes that will make impact on livelihoods of the inhabitants of the dryland areas of West and Central Africa.
