The Centre of National Space Research and Development Agency has approved the deployment of multi-million naira automatic weather station equipment for installation at the recently set up Space Weather and Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, SWAP Lab, in Bayero University, Kano.
While receiving the equipment, the senior scientific officer of centre, Najib Galadanci, said the research and development facility is within the Tropospheric Data Acquisition Network, TRODAN, and is capable of measuring several atmospheric parameters at five-minute interval and transmit same at near real time to dedicated server for global usage.
According to him, the parameters are air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, solar radiation, volumetric water content, soil temperature, wind speed and direction measured simultaneously across the 18 stations in Nigeria.
The multi-research equipment will serve as a major source of data to various fields of research in Faculty of Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Agriculture and Engineering, among others.
BUK station is the nineteenth TRODAN station within the network and second station in the North-Western Nigeria.
