BUK gets TV licence as varsity plans unbundling of Mass Communication

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has granted a Direct Satellite Broadcast, DSB, licence to Bayero University, Kano, BUK, just as the university is planning to unbundle the department of Mass Communication into various independent departments in the institution.

The Director General of the NBC, Is’haq Modibbo-Kawu made the disclosure yesterday when the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mohammed Yahuza Bello, paid a courtesy visit at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja.

Receiving the delegation, Modibbo-Kawu noted that the commission had a tremendous partnership with the BUK, adding that the broadcast licence granted to the university will allow it set up its own television station as well as offer an opportunity for the training of students in Television Broadcasting.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his appreciation to the DG and management of the commission for the TV licence granted to the University.

He assured the management of the NBC that the institution would use the licence properly in accordance with the laid down rules of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

According to him, the code of practice would be for the good and betterment of the broadcasting industry as well as the development of Nigeria.

Prof. Bello reiterated that the TV licence issued to the institution could not have come at a better time, given the unbundling of Mass Communication in the institution.

He further noted that the licence would be used for the training of students in the area of investigative journalism and broadcasting in general and it will also afford the students the opportunity to practice.

The VC assured the Commission of its support in carrying out its regulatory mandate.
