A security analyst, Audu Bulama Bukarti, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into an explosion that occurred at ammunition storage facilities at the Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the military authorities have attributed the cause of the explosion to extreme high weather conditions in Maiduguri.
But reacting to the incident in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday, Mr Bukarti said the call for investigation had become imperative “given Giwa Barracks’ central role in the fight against Boko Haram”.
He also expressed worry that the explosion is coming at a time the insurgents are threatening a major resurgence.
Mr Bukarti, however, said swift and open action is critical to prevent the spread of conspiracy theories.
The statement reads, ”A fire broke out last night at the weapons storage facility in Giwa Barracks, a military base in Maiduguri, Borno State, triggering explosions that caused panic among residents. Fearing a Boko Haram attack, many were alarmed by the blasts.
“Authorities later confirmed the fire began around 10:30 p.m. and was eventually extinguished. They said preliminary findings suggest extreme heat may have been the cause.
“Given Giwa Barracks’ central role in the fight against Boko Haram—and the fact that this incident comes at a time when the group is threatening a major resurgence—a thorough and transparent investigation is essential. Swift and open action is especially critical to prevent the spread of conspiracy theories. If the government fails to investigate promptly, publish its findings immediately, and hold those responsible to account, speculation will likely fill the void and further complicate the situation”.
