Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has approved the sum of N15.9 billion for the construction of 3600 housing units, just as the governor also approved another N1billion for the supply of 50 busses for transportation services in the state.
A statement by the state Commissioner of Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, said the approval was ratified on Wednesday during the State Executive Council meeting chaired by the governor.
Mr Bego disclosed that the housing project would be pursued in phases, saying that at the first phase, 1800 units, or 50 percent of the approved total would be built across the 17 local government areas of the state.
“These 1800 housing units comprises 701 units of three-bedrooms, 324 units of two-bedrooms urban and 775 units of two-bedroom rural designs.
“Funds for the construction of the 3600 housing units have been secured from the Federal Ministry of Finance through the Family Homes Finance Ltd,” the statement noted.
On the need for the procurement of 50 busses, the commissioner stated that the government-owned transport vehicles had aged and became dysfunctional due to many years of use on the highways.
He said the “council also ratified the sum of N1, 086, 875, 000.00 for the supply of 50 Toyota Hiace Hummer Busses for the Yobe Transport Services Ltd, Damaturu.”
“The procurement of the buses is therefore designed to replenish and reinvigorate the fleet of the Yobe Transport Company so that the company is better able to provide quality and efficient service across the state and the country,” he added.
Mr Bego stated that during the meeting, another N273, 582, 463.50 and N136, 000, 000.00 had been earmarked for the construction of one kilometre of road and two kilometres of concrete drains that links Obasanjo Estate, Damaturu with Mallum Mattari Ward.
Other projects included the raising of three million seedlings and rehabilitation of three nurseries at Nguru, Gashu’a and Bayamari respectively.
