Bus driver in court for allegedly pushing policewoman out of moving vehicle

A 41-year-old commercial driver, John Imoh, who allegedly pushed a policewoman out of a moving vehicle, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Mr Imoh, who resides at Ojodu-Berger, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.

The Police Prosecutor, Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 22 at Fagba, Agege, Lagos.

Mr Awase said the accused assaulted Insp. Patricia Okhide attached to the traffic section of the Nigeria police while performing her lawful duty.

He said: “the accused obstructed other road users when he was cautioned to move his vehicle away and he refused.

“He was arrested by the complainant on the order of her boss, but on their way to the station the accused pushed the complainant out of his bus and she was injured.”

The prosecutor said the accused was arrested by some mobile policemen.

He said the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section stipulates a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, F.F George, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

George said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until May 15 for mention.
