Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Joe Erico, has said that the camping of Super Eagles in France ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa is not a waste of public fund. The Eagles will face the South African in in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
There are suggestions that the Eagles’ handler, Coach Gernot Rohr, should have camped the team in any of the neighbouring country since the team will be playing against a fellow Africa team. But Erico insists that Rohr’s decision was to assist the players get to camp early enough without traveling difficulties.
He stated that the AFCON game against South Africa needed to be taken seriously to avoid any form of complacency.Erico, who stated that the camping of the team in France is another way to send signal to their opponent that the game is treated with outmost seriousness, pleaded with Rohr to pick players without sentiments. He added that the team could only excel if the right players are used.
“The camping of Eagles in France is not a waste of public fund. Rohr is an experienced coach; he knows that he will not have all the players that he needed on time if they are to arrive in Nigeria. I guess this is why he opened the camp in a central place where they would not have any problem.
“After the training in France, I believe the players will be psychologically ready for the game. Camping the players in an Africa country will not solve the problem. Rohr has a good reason of making the team assemble first in France, it is also a way of creating fear into our opponents that we are preparing seriously for the tie,” he said .
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation through its Media Officer, Ademola Olajire, has said that the body would not interfere in the list that will be released this week for the AFCON qualifier.
