U.S. lawmakers, who have proposed a new bill against telecommunications giant Huawei, have “sinister” intentions to contain the rise of the world’s second-largest economy, according to the Chinese Government.
Geng Shuang, the Spokesman of the China Foreign Ministry, disclosed at a press briefing on Wednesday that U.S. senators have shown prejudice against China.
“They have exposed their sinister intentions to contain China’s development and undermine Sino U.S. relations,’’ he said.
China says “unjustified” sanctions against Huawei are hurting global supply chains and the interests of U.S. companies.
The comments came a day after U.S. lawmakers introduced a bill that would prevent the White House from removing Huawei from a blacklist without first getting Congress’ approval.
The bill in the Senate, dubbed the Defending America’s 5G Future Act, was introduced by members of both parties.
The bill comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump offering some concessions on Huawei to Chinese President Xi Jinping at last month’s G20 meeting.
Huawei was placed on a U.S. Commerce Department blacklist in May, but Trump has said that he would make exemptions for U.S. firms to do business with the company on issues not affecting national security.
A similar bill was introduced in the House of Representatives this week.
The U.S. accuses Huawei of facilitating Chinese government spying and has put pressure on Western allies to not use the company’s technology.
The Chinese company has become a major component of the U.S. China trade war, though relations thawed somewhat after the G20 in Japan, as both sides agreed to resume talks.
