Climate change: ACRESAL to construct water conservation, irrigation facilities in 3 Kano LGs

The Agro-Climatic Resilience and Arid Landscape, ACReSAL, has revealed plans to construct three water conservation structures in three Local Government Areas in Kano State.

The Kano State Coordinator of ACReSAL, Dr Dahiru Hashim, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the activities of the project in Kano on Friday.

According to him, the water conservation structures would be constructed in Fajewa, Dawan Kaya and Yar’titi communities in Takai, Makoda and Shanono Local Government areas respectively.

He also stated that the project would provide minor irrigation facilities in the three aforementioned communities, adding that ACReSAL would construct two erosion control sites in Bulbula/Gayawa and Rarin in Ungogo, Nassarawa and Dawakin Tofa Local Government areas in order to achieve project deliverables and results.

Mr Hashim said: “To nature-based solutions for environmental management, Kano ACRESAL intended to construct Three Water Conservation Structures and Provision of Minor Irrigation Facilities in Fajewa, Dawan Kaya and Yar’titi in Takai, Makoda and Shanono LGAs respectively.

“The Project, which became effective in 2022, also intends to provide Two Erosion Control Sites in Bulbula/Gayawa and Rarin in Ungogo Nassarawa and Dawakin Tofa LGAs in order to achieve Project deliverables and results,” Mr Hashim added.

According to him, to combat the negative effect of climate change, the Project targets reclaiming over 1 million hectares of degraded land, adding that it also ails to restore 50,000Ha degraded land rehabilitation across the delineated watershed in the state.

Mr Hashim added that the move is in line with landscape restoration activities and tree planting campaigns to combat the negative effect of climate change, imbibe the culture of planting trees.

“Kano ACRESAL strengthen the capacity of communities for sustainable natural resource use and management. This Support will be provided to ‘local project implementation committees’, or their local equivalent.

“Social cohesion and peace building that will be strengthened by addressing gender inequalities, and needs for vulnerable and marginalized groups, and by improving conflict resolution capacities at the local level.

“Kano ACRESAL also intended to construct 50 number solar powered boreholes in water stressed communities in Kano State,” he added.

In terms of Community Revolving Fund, CRF, activities Kano ACRESAL, according to him, would support community groups, targeting women and other groups within the farming value chain specifically to implement climate smart agricultural practices. 

This, according to him, “has recorded tremendous progress; a core group was formed within the Project, leading to the development of the CRF Handbook. The handbook will support effective implementation of the CRF activity. In the same vein, Additional M&E indicators for tracking implementation of CRF are in place.

“The Farmer-Led Irrigation Development (FLID) is an initiative to enhance solar power irrigation farming in Nigeria. To further understand the concept, a FLID Workshop was organized by the World Bank which improved the knowledge of Project staff, deliberations took place on the best approach to utilize for the implementation of FLID.

“Importantly, a FLID Manual has been developed to provide guidance for the smooth and effective implementation of FLID. A FLID consultant who will support the activities of FLID implementation has been engaged by FPMU,” he said.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that ACReSAL is a $700m 6-year World Bank Project, prioritizing actions within four components: Dryland Management, Community Climate Resilience, Institutional Strengthening and Project Management, and Contingent Emergency Response with the target to improve the capacity of the country to adapt to a changing climate, largely through enhancing multi-sectoral convergence.
