The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, on Friday inaugurated 30 Flats Family Corporal Below Quarters at the Maimalari military cantonment, Maiduguri to fulfill his pledge on troops’ welfare.
Mr Lagbaja inaugurated the project during his operational tour of the Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai.
Army Spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, made this known in a statement on Friday.
Mr Nwachukwu said the project was in line with the COAS’ Command philosophy, which is “to transform the Nigerian Army into a well trained, equipped and highly motivated force towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment”.
He said the newly constructed block of flats was complete with a living room, two bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms and toilets, as well as a kitchen in each flat.
During the ceremony, the COAS said the structure was part of the efforts to meet the accommodation demands of troops and their families.
He also assured troops of his commitment to sustain the ongoing transformation of the Nigerian Army through effective interventions in training, equipment acquisition and infrastructure development across formations and units.
Addressing the combined troops of Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, Headquarters 7 Division, 7 Division Garrison and 212 Battalion, the COAS affirmed that all welfare issues would be treated with utmost concern.
He assured them that what was due to them would get to them, adding that personal and group life insurance would be taken care of as well as provision of electricity, water and other amenities in the barracks.
Mr Lagbaja urged troops to reciprocate the gesture with unhindered adherence to core values of the Nigerian Army and unalloyed loyalty to the Constitution and Government of Nigeria.
During a visit to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno, the COAS expressed appreciation to the government and people of Borno for their support and interventions that had culminated in the level of stability so far attained in the region.
He lauded the roles of the JTF vigilantes and the Borno people, urging them not to relent in their support to the troops, as they undauntedly foght the course of humanity.
In his response, Mr Zulum reiterated the commitment of the government and people of Borno State to partner the army and other security agencies in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Umar Kadafur, appreciated the significant improvement in the security situation in the state, pointing out that the government was committed to the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programme in the state.
