There is confusion in Nasarawa State House of Assembly, following the emergence of two speakers for the assembly.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the immediate past speaker, Ibrahim Balarabe, and Daniel Ogazi, a member representing Kokona East constituency, emerged speakers of the House in controversial elections conducted separately on Tuesday outside the Assembly complex.
Our correspondent also gathered that the crisis that led to the parallel elections started when some of the lawmakers-elect arrived at the Assembly complex in Lafia for the inauguration but were informed that the inauguration had been postponed indefinitely.
The acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Musa, in a statement on Tuesday, said the postponement was based on security advice made available to Governor Abdullahi Sule.
But Mr Ogazi, who had the support of other 13 lawmakers, refused to leave the assembly premises and conducted an election in which he emerged speaker after getting 14 votes.
On the other hand, shortly after the notice of postponement was issued, Mr Balarabe, who is believed to have the backing of the governor, went to the state Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and conducted an election.
He emerged as speaker after scoring 10 votes.
Messrs Balarabe and Ogazi are both members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Mr Ogazi’s faction also elected Mohammed Oyanki as deputy, while Jacob Kudu was elected deputy to Mr Balarabe.
