The chairman of Shiroro local government area in Niger State, Akilu Isyaku, and the state assistant youth leader of the All Progressives Congress, Suleiman Galkogo, narrowly escaped bandits’ attack on Sunday.
The chairman was said to be returning to Minna after attending an event in Kuta, the headquarters of the council, when the bandits in their large numbers stormed the road and began to shoot sporadically.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Shiroro is one of the local governments witnessing frequent attacks by bandits in the state.
Confirming the incident to DAILY NIGERIAN, the chief of staff to the chairman, Daniel Jagaba, said Mr Isyaku escaped unharmed.
“The chairman was returning from a function in Kuta on Sunday noon, when they [bandits] stormed the road and began to shoot sporadically. The incident happened in Egwa, but to the glory of God, he escaped unhurt,” he said.
He added that Mr Isyaku immediately made a distress call to the security agencies, who promised to respond swiftly.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered the council chairman and Mr Galkogo, were traveling separately but rammed into the bandits almost at the same time.
The attack was said to have led to serious panic among the people of the community, who were all fleeing the area before the arrival of the security operatives.
The spokesperson of the Niger state police command, Wasiu Abiodun, was yet to reply to SMS sent to his line at the time of filing this report.
