An Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, in Jos, on Friday sentenced a 23-year-old barber, Johnson Goyol, to 32 months in prison for stealing provisions worth N20,000.

The judge, Lawal Suleiman, sentenced Goyol, after he pleaded guilty to breaking, entry and theft.

The convict begged the court for leniency.

Mr Suleiman, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N19,000.

The judge held that the punishment would serve as deterrent to other people who would want to engage in such criminal acts.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Momday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported on Sept.3, at the Anglo-Jos Police Station by the complainant, Ayuba Musa.

Mr Dabit said the convict broke into the complainant’s shop five times and stole provisions.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 333, 337 and 273 of the Plateau State Penal Code.
