The Kano State Technical Response Team says it will restructure its communication strategy in order to curtail the spread of fake news and rumours about the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
The new Coordinator of the team, Dr Tijjani Hussaini, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Kano.
He said that the fake news and rumours being spread on the social media had impacted negatively on the awareness campaign against the deadly disease in the state.
According to him, “People obtain baseless information and circulate them without authentication and valid sources.”
He said that as the new team leader, he would do his best to be as transparent as possible, as the state moved to fight the disease headlong.
The team, he said, would soon have its own official social media handles, which would contain authentic information for public consumption.
Mr Hussaini, however, appealed to the media in the state to verify issues with the right authorities before publication, noting that the support of the media was vital, especially during this period of the pandemic.
