The Kano State Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, says it has seized over 2.8 tons of illegal drugs during the COVID-19 lockdown period in the state.
The state’s commander of NDLEA, Ibrahim Abdul, made this known on Thursday in Kano while addressing newsmen in commemoration of International Day Against Drug and Illicit Trafficking, 2020.
According to him, apart from the 1.6 tons seized by the operatives of the command, about 1.2 tons of these illegal drugs were seized by its sister agencies such as police, Customs and vigilante groups within the lockdown period.
Giving an update about the command’s activities from June 2019 to date, the commander said that 565 suspects had been arrest by the command.
According to him, 549 out of the suspect are male, while 16 are female.
He added that the command had succeeded in seizing 7,873.937kg of illegal drugs that includes Cannabis Sativa, Psychotropic, Cocaine, Heroin, among others.
The commander added that within the period under review, the command had intercepted a Toyota Sequoia Jeep along Kano-Zaria road containing 300 blockade of compressed Cannabis Sativa, weighing 223kg and tucked inside the car’s engine and tank.
“Worthy of note also is a syndicate of Baron dealing in cocaine was unbundled by our team where two suspects were apprehended, a male and female, with cocaine weighing 100 grams,” he disclosed.
Mr Abdul also stated that the command had secured 85 conviction while 76 cases are pending before the court.
While commanding the Command’s sister agencies for the synergy, Mr Abdul noted that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires a “collective effort by all and sundry”.
