The secretary of the Sokoto Concerned Youth, Fahad Longman, has called for the dissolution of the state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN.
Mr Longman, in a letter of petition against the chairman, Aliyu Gadanga, said the announcement of Mr Gadanga as the chairman by the ministry of youth and sport lacked proper procedure.
The scribe, who said the petition was written on behalf of Sokoto Youth, said the ministry single-handedly picked the chairman without consultations with stakeholders, as demanded by the constitution.
Mr Longman, while citing relevant sections of the council’s constitution, also accused Mr Gadanga of overshooting the age bracket put by the constitution.
“Mr Gadanga was announced by the Ministry of Youth and Sport as the Chairman for The NYCN Sokoto State Chapter since 10th October, 2016.
“However, his appointment was done without due consultations with various stakeholders both in the State and the National level is deplorable and without the adherence of the Constitution of The National Youth Council of Nigeria as amended 2012 which has led to its violations,” he said.
And to support his claims, Mr Longman cited the breaches of the constitutional provisions.
“Violation of election process; The NYCN Sokoto neither prepared nor conducted any election “By Open Secret ballot” before the appointment of the chairman and his executive council as required by the NYCN constitution as amended 2012 in Articles 12.(I,II).
“Age limitation; According to our findings, the present Chaiman of the NYCN in Sokoto State Chapter, Alh. Aliyu Ibrahim Gadanga is above 35 years even on his appointment in 2016, which is above the range acceptable to be categorised as a youth in Nigeria in accordance to 2009 National Youth Policy of Nigeria.
“Moreover, the NYCN 2012 constitution as amended also states that a person is not eligible to stand for any election if that person has celebrated his 35th birthday as in Articles 12.2(viii)
“Subsequently, we also believe that the illegally appointed Chairman does not fully carry out the responsibilities of the office by not defending the constitution of the NYCN and does not “render honest, impartial, and efficient services” to the Youth Council as required by Article 20 (a&b)
“In view thereof, we wish to call for the immediate dissolution of Alh. Ibrahim Gadanga and other executive members of the NYCN Sokoto State Chapter in respect to the constitution.
“We also wish to call for the inauguration of an interim council to be given at least 90 days as required by the constitution in Article 12.3 (a) to constitute and inaugurate (13) Man congress planning committee to conduct an election,” the petition said.
By complying with these demands, the secretary said, harmony and justice for the youth of Sokoto State and Nigeria at large would prevailed.
