The Penlight Media Limited, which publishes DAILY NIGERIAN online newspaper, has launched a new media innovation centre with a view to addressing challenges associated with the information dissemination in the new media era.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the Penlight Centre for New Media Innovation is a non-profit organisation that has its headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the launch on Tuesday in Kano, the Executive Director of the Center, Jaafar Jaafar, said the center was established to equip the people with the requisite skills on how to use Social Media as a source of information for positive change.
Mr Jaafar, who is also the Editor-In-Chief of the DAILY NIGERIAN, added that the idea behind establishing the centre came as a result of the discovery that northern Nigeria was lagging behind in the area of training on how to use Information Technology tools, especially social media.

According to him, centre would, therefore, work towards bridging that gap by providing training on social media usage and trend, investigative journalism as well as other media interface that would bring about social justice, transparency and accountability.
“This centre will serve as an avenue for training of journalists, citizen journalists and other individuals on social media usage and investigative journalism, which has become a new trend in the media development.
“We are also going to target is individuals, groups, rural communities, as well as constructive engagement with women groups to debate on national issues, among others,” Mr Jaafar said.
Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of the center, Yushau A. Shuaib, noted that the centre would groom youth, especially from northern Nigeria, on the positive usage of social media and Information technology.
According to him, the centre has enjoyed support from prominent individuals as well as media professionals right from the conception of the idea.
