Youth and Sports Development Minister, Solomon Dalung, yesterday revealed that his ministry was bent on restoring corporate bodies and multi-nationals’ confidence to the sector by ensuring prudent and responsible use of sports sponsorship funds by Nigerian federations and sports organisations

Speaking during a private visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Total Upstream Nigeria Companies, Mr. Nicolas Terraz in Lagos, Dalung said, “the ministry of sports was embarking on some major reforms and would work with corporate sponsors to supervise and monitor all sponsorship funds and grants to ensure that they are used completely for the purposes budgeted for.”

The Minister thanked the Total Group for the $15 million invested in African youths through the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over eight years.

“That is evidence that Total recognises the massive talents that abound in Africa and appreciates the role sports can play in engaging and empowering our youth and solving the problems of poverty and crime and the reckless immigration journeys to Europe by our youth.

“Although Nigeria did not qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations, we have exciting young talents like Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and many others who are world class players and would make Nigeria get global attention at the World Cup in the no distant future. So we hope that this sponsorship will trickle down to Nigeria.

“However, while it is important to do well at the highest levels of sports, it is perhaps more important to invest in and develop structures and systems that will enable us to harness and nurture the huge talents that abound in Nigeria to become world class stars who will create wealth for themselves and the nation. The more sports talents we can produce and export the better for us.”
