The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Suleiman Kazaure, has urged Desk Officers of the NYSC from all 36 states of the Federation to ensure proper records-keeping, probity and accountability in the management of resources, adherence to established procedures in the conduct of the commission’s operation and delivery of services to stakeholders.
Mr Kazaure while speaking today at this years’ NYSC Freedom of Information Act Desk Officers Training Workshop, with the theme: Towards Enhancing the FOIA Administration, said the programme is aimed at broadening the knowledge of the Desk Officers, who are saddled with FOIA implementation at the National Directorate Headquarters and the State Secretariats.
While commending the Desk Officers for their commitment to their assigned responsibilities, he said there is room for improvement, stating that the essence of the workshop is to equip them with fresh ideas for improved performance.
Mr Kazaure, a brigadier-general, also charged Directors, Heads of Units and State Coordinators of the agency to step up their supervisory role to ensure that all official conduct is in conformity with the extant rules and regulations.
Some of the dignitaries present at the event were Deputy Director/Head FOI Unit Federal Ministry of Justice, Benjamin Okolo; National Coordinator, Right to Know, Nigeria, Ene Nwankpe and; Desk Officer FOI, Federal Ministry of Justice Abuja, Ichibor Gowon Joseph.
Also at the workshop are top officials of the NYSC which includes Director of Information and Technology, Christy Uba, Director Internal Audit, Leke Abiodun, Director Human Resource, A.C. Makinde, among others.
Earlier in her welcome address, The Acting Director, Press and Public Relations, Adeyemi Adenike, said the workshop is geared towards improving the competence of officers through acquisition of fresh knowledge and ideas.
She said this action informed the choice of this years’ theme (Towards Enhancing the FOIA Administration Process).
“Since the act came into being, the NYSC FOIA desk has, with the full support of Management, tried to ensure that the scheme remains among the best complying MDAs.
“Aside from appointing Desk Officers for the National Directorate Headquaters and the State Secretariats, Management has equipped all desk offices with working materials. The Director-General has ensured the provision of appropriate training for officials of the scheme on the public’s right to access information or records held in National Youth Service Corps.
“I am happy to report that the Desk Officers have continued to demonstrate competence and commitment in the handling of their duties; thereby justifying Management’s investment in their training. We have ensured timely response to FOIA requests from interested members of the public as well as forwarding of prompt annual reports to the Federal Ministry of Justice. I wish to restate our commitment in this regard,” she added.
