The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested no fewer than 140 suspects of drug abuse in the state within the month of August.
Briefing newsmen at the command on Tuesday, the state commander of NDLEA, Ibrahim Abdul said eight suspects had been charged to court.
According to him, the arrest was made through a sustained operation conducted by the Joint Task Force, adding that the areas raided included the state metropolis and some local government areas.
He also disclosed that within the period under review, the command had seized 332.657kg its cannabis sativa, 167.322kg of psychotropic substances, 0.05grams of cocaine and 2kg of khat, amounting to 501.984kg of the illicit substances.
The commander noted that the statistic of the seized items represents a sharp decline in the psychotropic abuse and trafficking, adding that the feat was recorded in view of the tremendous operation and intervention activities.

“Also, more was achieved in terms of counselling and rehabilitations. In the months under review, three regular clients were admitted and seven regular clients were counselled and rehabilitated, while 103 drug users were referred for brief intervention.
“8 new cases were charged to court, 79 cases were pending and no conviction because court are on vacation.
“Effort of some community leaders that served as a watch dog to the command by providing information on illegal drug activities in their various locality is commendable,” Mr Abdul said.
The coordinator, however, stated that more feats on Drug Demand Reduction activities, such as lectures were recorded.
He also commended the effort of the state Hisbah Board in partnering with the command in fighting illegal drug activities in the state.
