An Abuja-based Consultant Pathologist, Dr Ike Okonkwo, on Monday in Abuja, said that early treatment was the best way to cure leprosy.

Okonkwo, a consultant with the Maitama District Hospital, Abuja, told the News Agency of Nigeria that leprosy could be completely cured if the sufferer commenced treatment early enough.

Mr Okonkwo spoke in commemoration of the World Leprosy Day, celebrated annually on Jan. 29.

“The symptoms are pale hypopigmented or reddish skin patches with definite loss of sensation.

“Another is thickened or enlarged peripheral nerves with associated loss of sensation,” he said.

According to Mr Okonkwo, leprosy is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacteria Leprae and a neglected tropical disease that is present in 120 countries.

He said that Nigeria records no fewer than 10,000 new cases every year.

The medical expert urged sufferers to seek early treatment to avoid permanent disability.
