Markets, banks, filling stations, and schools have been shut down in Abakaliki, the capital city of Ebonyi State, following attacks by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered business owners who had earlier opened were forced to shut down as sounds of gunshots rent the air.
Videos and pictures on social media showed how people were running in different directions, scampering for safety.
It was also gathered that the insurgents were out to enforce sit-at-home order issued by a Finland-based member of the outlawed group, Simon Ekpa.
The gunmen, who wore masks, razed a section of Aha Market located along the Abakaliki-Enugu highway.
Reacting to the incident, the police public relations officer in the state, Chris Anyanwu, urged residents to remain calm, saying there was no cause for alarm.
Mr Anyanwu also disclosed that no lives were lost during the incidents, promising to give further details on the attack.
“There is no cause for alarm; Ebonyi State is calm. However, if anything to the contrary is confirmed, I will come up with updates or briefs, please,” he said in a statement.
