Anthony Ani has emerged as the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate for the by-election for Ebonyi South Senatorial District slated for February 3, 2024.
The professor of Agricultural Extension at Federal University of Owerri, Imo State, polled 281 votes out of 285 votes cast.
The chairman of the electoral panel, Akin Akinsehinwa, while announcing result of the party primaries over the weekend at Afikpo North Local government Secretariat, Ebonyi South Headquarters, disclosed that the primary was conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act and constitution of APC.
He noted that Mr Ani won unopposed as Ann Agom Eze, one of the aspirants who indicated interest after purchasing form, didn’t return it and never appeared for screening.
The by-election is being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to replace Senator Dave Umahi, who left the seat to take up appointment by President Bola Tinubu as the Minister of Works.
Mr Umahi had last week endorsed the nomination of Mr Ani as the APC consensus candidate for the by-election.
The former governor of the state, who made the pronouncement at Oferekpe Agbaja in Izzi Local government Area when he visited the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, endorsed the decision of the state working committee of the party and declared total support for the candidate, noting that Ebonyi is totally APC.
He emphasised that this is the first election under the leadership of the state governor, and as such, it is an opportunity to demonstrate total commitment and support to the party.
