The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the September 21 governorship election has said the abysmally poor performance of the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, would ease his victory in the polls.

Mr Akpata, who stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, also dismissed the claim that he is being funded by Mr Obaseki.

According to him, his campaign was being funded by himself and friends, expressing optimism that he would win the election.

Mr Akpata said: “I am funding myself, and I have friends. You know what they say, your network is your net worth. I have friends who believe in me. I have friends who believe in this cause.

“I have people from Edo State, who believe we can do so much better. We are able to get the kind of funding we require.

“I have practiced law successfully for over 30 years. Give me some credit, we have taken into consideration all that is required for this race.

“I assure you that we are going to win. So, those who are hoping we run out of steam, they have something else coming in for them.

“I am not from the other zone. I am from Edo State. The people are saying they are ready to take a chance with the Labour Party, irrespective of where the candidate comes from. Because they know we have a track record of performance.

“Based on that, they are ready because the other party performed abysmally. A state that earns N16 billion every month is the state that is owing close to N600 billion and the people are in abject poverty. They are less concerned with where the candidate comes from because they have seen nothing.”
