The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, has disclosed that over N30billion was recovered out of the N109 billion allegedly embezzled by the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, AGF, Ahmed Idris.
Mr Bawa made the disclosure on Thursday at a weekly press briefing organized by the presidential communications team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
In July, Mr Idris was arraigned before an FCT High Court alongside Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman, and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited on 14 count charges bothering on stealing and criminal breach of trust.
Responding to a question on the independence of the commission, Mr Bawa stressed that the commission is independent and not influenced by any individual.
He added that high-profile personalities and government agencies have been subjected to investigation.
“EFCC is independent. Nobody is telling us what to do, what to investigate, how to investigate, how to recover, or what not to recover.
“Give us intel. We have been asking people to give us intel and we will do it.
“The last major investigation that we did was that we arrested the AGF. Out of that fraudulent activities, EFCC has recovered over N30 billion and we are already prosecuting them,” he said.
