The Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has broken his silence over the controversial statement issued by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the state of the nation.
On January 23, Mr Obasanjo released a 13-page ‘special press statement’, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.
In the statement entitled, “The Wat Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement’, Mr Obasanjo urged the president to honourably forgo presidential aspiration in 2019 owing to his dismal performance.
The letter had raised dust in the political turf, with the Presidency issuing a subtle rejoinder, highlighting the president’s achievements.
But in a Facebook post on Sunday, Mr El-Rufai, who served Mr Obasanjo as director-general of Bureau for Public Enterprise, BPE, and later minister of the Federal Capital Territory, reacted to his former principal’s statement.
“I have not read Obasanjo’s statement because it’s too long and I am too busy,” Mr El-Rufai posted on Sunday.
“I have no doubt in my mind that we will win the 2019 Presidential election. We will also win our 24 States and more because there are two groups of the Nigerian people; the elites and the ordinary Nigerians. The ordinary Nigerians will win 2019 again, God’s willing.”
