Capital School, Kaduna, which was established in 1957, is being renovated with N195 million to make it one of the best in the country.
Abubakar Bukar, supervising engineer of the renovation works being handled by Zahafs Ventures Ltd, said the renovation would be completed within 24 weeks.
“We mobilised to the site three weeks ago and shall complete the job within 24 weeks as agreed,” Mr Bukar told Kande Bage, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, when she visited the school on Wednesday.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the renovation works involve massive structural changes, painting, re-roofing and the installation of modern doors and windows.
NAN also observed that the entire administrative block and classes were being renovated to give them a new look.
Mrs Bage, in a brief speech after assessing work so far done, said the goal was to give the school a facelift and restore its glory as the best in the north.
“When the renovation is completed, we shall provide all equipment required to boost quality teaching and learning.
“Capital School has always been one of the best schools around; it has always been our pride. We want to restore its glory,” she said.
Mrs Bage said more than 28 schools had been renovated and equipped with modern facilities by the state government, adding that more schools were being considered for such attention.
The permanent secretary directed the school principal to submit a comprehensive list of areas left out in the renovation contract, especially the dearth of chairs quality laboratories, for necessary action.
She commended the contractor for the quality of job being undertaken, and emphasised the need to complete the job within the agreed deadline.
The principal, Labaran Hassan, who thanked government for renovating the school, said the efforts would add value and quality to teaching and learning.
Mr Hassan said the school had a population of 3,720 students in its nursery, primary and secondary sections, which were being taught by 90 staff.
He said an additional 45 teachers were required to meet the standard student/teacher ratio, for effective teaching.
Hassan appealed for the supply of chairs and tables for teachers, as wells as laboratory equipment and furniture for the science, technical and woodwork laboratories.
