A pro-democracy group, Citizens Action for Good Governance, has called for the sacking of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, saying that his political adventure is plunging the country’s economy into crisis.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Coordinator of the group, Nazir Galadanchi, lamented that Mr Emefiele’s now rested presidential ambition has eroded confidence in the country’s banking industry by both local & foreign investors.

He said: “From whatever angle one considered the volitional action of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, his expression of interest to vie for the Presidency of Nigeria while a sitting public officer, has made people lose confidence in the nation’s banking industry under his leadership as the head of the apex bank.

“This is more so reinforced by the statements credited to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) Professor Mahmud Yakubu, to the fact that the nation’s electoral umpire will no longer keep its sensitive and non-sensitive materials in the custody of the CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA, since Mr. Godwin Emefiele, is now partisan and an interested party. The need to protect our electoral integrity is most pertinent.”

According to the group, Mr Emefiele’s “political misadventure and clear partisanship” have made him lose concentration over the wave of foreign exchange racketeering under his supervision.

“[As at] today, the NAIRA currently exchanges for no fewer than N605,000/$. The rate which Nigeria’s national currency, is crumbling at the expense of the US Dollars, Euro and significant other currencies, is not only alarming but frightening,” Mr Galadanchi disclosed.

The group added that the lack of leadership direction “due to the distractions and further lack of capacity to have firm control on the robust administration of the country’s Fiscal Instruments functionality amid competing global economic and market forces of trade, supply and demand of goods and services, has further worsened the basic economic conditions of daily existence of the average Nigerian citizen, who barely manages to ache out a decent living”.

Mr Galadanchi lamented that the “over hyped” Anchor Borrowers Programme for rice farmers further heightened corruption in Nigeria as few political farmers were enriched at the detriment of genuine farmers.

“These conditions have scaling up the prices of goods and services, within the urban and rural areas of the country, offering both the average, below-average and low-classed Nigerian citizens, the option of passing through the painful experience of witnessing rural poverty and urban misery, due to the dysfunctional administrative leadership capacity of the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.”

The group, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful and rescue what’s left of our country.

“The continuous stay of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria will further compromise our Economic Security,” the group added.
