Kano State Police command has arrested 31 persons suspected to have vandalized private malls and carted away valuables in the wake of EndSARS protest in the state.
The command also displayed properties worth millions of naira recovered from the suspects.
Addressing press conference at the Command headquarters in Kano on on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police, Habu Sani disclosed that the arrest and recovery followed the operatives intelligence.
Mr Sani explained that the protesters, who perpetrated the heinous crime under the guise of peaceful protest, invaded private shopping malls and business facilities and stolen the items.
Items recovered from the suspected looters according to the CP, include 27 Gas cylinders and fire extinguishers, 4 washing machines, 11 refrigerators, 6 Generator Sets and 2 Grinding machines.
Other items recovered are One sack containing drugs and injection, 9 New Wrappers (textile), 10 Boxes containing clothes, 44 new motor cycle tires, ceiling and standing fans, 4 Air conditioners, 12 Mattresses among other.
The CP regretted that what started as peaceful demonstration was later turned violence between the protesters and hoodlums subsequently led to burning of eight vehicles, vandalized 38 shops including the popular Galaxy Mall on Ibo road Sabongari, and Chicken Republic on airport road.
“On the 19/10/2020 at about 0715hrs, uncoordinated groups of protesters mobilized at Sabon Gari Quarters Kano under the cover of “EndSars Protest” carried out procession from Sarkin Yaki Area of Sabon Gari to France Road up to Kwakwaci and Airport Road where some of protesters trespassed into a Political Party Office, removed the Flags and pelted stones.
“The so call #EndSars groups defied all consultations and advice of critical community/security stakeholders, remobilized and embarked on another protest and procession where the whole situation was hijacked by hoodlums and clashes erupted and resultant destruction and looting. Some attacked innocent people, burnt and vandalized properties.
“The swift and timely deployments of security personnel by the Commissioner of Police Kano State Command *CP Habu A. Sani psc* who directed teams of Operation Puff Adder led by *DCP Sule Balarabe* to proceed to the scene, restore normalcy in the area and arrest the perpetrators of these heinous acts. In the same vein, *CP Habu A. Sani, psc* immediately engaged critical Community Policing stakeholders.
“The police met with Traditional Rulers, Community and Religious Leaders, Youths Groups, Civil Society Organizations, the Media, etc, on the need to preach and sensitize members of the public on peace and peaceful coexistence, and also assured them of the command’s commitment for the safety and security of the State”.
The CP pledged the assurance of the Police to sustain peaceful and orderly society while assuring safety of good people of the state.
