The Katsina State chapter of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, has started the distribution of agricultural inputs to 39,950 farmers for wet season rice farming.
The state RIFAN Chairman, Shuaibu Wakili, made this known on Thursday at the launch of the inputs distribution in Daura.
According to him, the state chapter of RIFAN would distribute 100 trucks of fertilisers, 50,000 water pumping machines, 100,000 bottles of herbicides and insecticides and 200,000 bags of improved rice seedlings.
He said that the inputs were provided to rice farmers as loan under the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, ABP, adding that the loan would be repaid with bags of paddy within the stipulated period of one year.
Mr Wakili said that RIFAN had engaged the services of security agencies that would monitor the inputs distribution processes, stressing that the association would also monitor the implementation of the programme.
He warned the beneficiaries against diversion of the farm inputs or any act that could mar the successes so far recorded by the programme since its inception three years ago.
The Chairman, however, said that 75,000 farmers in the state had been registered for the wet season rice production scheme, adding that the remaining farmers would soon be considered.
Mr Wakili commended the Federal Government and other stakeholders for initiating ABP, saying that the programme had significantly reduced poverty and unemployment among millions of people nationwide.
DAILY NIGERIAN recalls that the Katsina State chapter of RIFAN had distributed agricultural inputs to thousands of rice farmers for dry season rice farming.
