Finally, body of drowned Kano varsity student recovered, buried

Authorities of Kano State University of Science and Technology, KUST, Wudil on Friday confirmed the recovery of the body of Farouk Abubakar, a Level 300 student of Biology (Education) drowned in the Wudil River.

DAILY NIGERIAN had reported that Mr Abubakar was drowned in the river on Wednesday, a situation that sparked riot by students of the university on the premise that the school authority was lackadaisical in rescuing the deceased.

The development prompted the authority of the institution to declare Thursday and Friday as lecture-free days to mourn the death of the student.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Shehu Alhaji, also extended the mid-semester break, billed to commence on Monday, May 7 from one week to two weeks.

Speaking to DAILY NIGERIA via a telephone, the Deputy Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relation of the institution,  Abdullahi Azai said the body was recovered in the morning of Friday by the local lifesavers, known as (Sarkin Ruwa).

Mr Arzai explained that the body of the deceased was sighted floating on the water at the scene of the incident, one day after a thorough search by fire-fighters and local lifesavers.

He added that the remains of late Abubakar was since handed over to his parents at Hotoro Tsamiyar Boka in the Kano metropolis.

He further revealed that the deceased was since buried according to Islamic rites at a nearby cemetery.

The spokesman lamented that the university had since banned students from swimming in the river, adding that the institution decided to fence the area where the student pass to access the river.

“Despite the fence, and the security guards stationed at the area, these boys breach the security and clean the wired fence to the river.

“The school authorities have now resolved to construct a wall to prevent the students from going to the river.

“We had since taken late Farouk to his family house and was buried according to Islamic rites. The school authorities use this opportunity to further condole with the parents, family and friends of late Farouk.

“We also urged students to stop going to the river for their own safety,” he appealed.
