Following pressures from student union and parents, the Bayero University Kano, BUK, has approved a downward review of the accommodation fees and administrative charges for its new and returning students.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the university had recently increased hostel accommodation and administrative charges for its post and under graduate students, a decision that caused outrage among the students and parents.

However, the BUK’s weekly bulletin issued on Friday by the Director, Examinations, Admissions and Records, DEAR, Amina Abdullahi disclosed the reduction, saying that the decision was as a result of complaints by the university’s Students’ Union Government, SUG.

A careful look at the breakdown of the reduction, as contained in the bulletin, indicated that the university reduced only N2000 and N5,000 in the accommodation fees for undergraduate and postgraduate students, respectively.

“Following the interaction and consultation between the students union and Management, a downward review was agreed as follows,” the bulletin said.

Under the new dispensation, according to the statement, postgraduate students are to pay N20,150 instead of N25,150 for accommodation, while for the undergraduate students, the fee for the hostel with bed and mattress has been reduced to N18,090, instead of N20,090.

“Those taking only bed spaces are to pay N10,090, each. The Students Union Government (SUG) expressed appreciation for the gesture,” said the statement.
