Companions of the Prophet, the Shining Stars in Our Galaxy
“And the foremost to embrace Islam of the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allaah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success” Qur’an 9:100
In every sphere of life, there is always a fall out or a black sheep regardless of how diligent the society is or how meticulous the moral and ethical values of the society and the tutors are. However, there is one society that defies this natural law, the society of the Sahabah, the companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Amazingly, none of the companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) in their thousands was a fall out. They were simply tutored and nurtured by RasuluAllaah (may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and were specifically selected by Allaah Exalted be He.
Qur’an is the last message from Allaah to mankind in the series of the messages He has been sending to Mankind through His chosen servants. Undoubtedly, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was/is the most pure-hearted of all servants of Allaah and was chosen for the best of all messages, Al-Qur’an. Same way Allaah chose the heirs of this great Prophet those from among mankind that have the purest of hearts and most deserving of the honor of conveying the original message of the Prophet (peace be upon him). These were none other than his noble companions (may Allaah be pleased with them).
Allaah Exalted be He says: “Allaah knows best with whom to place His Message” Qur’an 6:124 .. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) in Tareeq al-Hijratayn, said: “Allaah knows best where to place His Message, both with regard to the original recipient and those who inherit it from him (the Sahabah). He knows best who is fit to receive His Message and convey it to His slaves in a trustworthy and sincere manner, respecting the Sender and fulfilling his duties towards Him, patiently following His commands and showing gratitude for His blessings and drawing close to Him, and He knows who is not fit for that. Similarly, He knows best who among the nations is fit to be the heirs of His Messengers and to succeed them and convey the Message that they received from their Lord.”
What made the nobles of Prophet Muhammad’s people hasten toward his religion without any recourse to their positions or wealth?
The weak among the arabs rushed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for protection against the tyranny and the oppression of their rulers yet he has no weapons nor vast kingdom and dominion. The Kuffar (disbelievers) launched series of attacks on the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a terrifying way, yet the oppressed sought refuge in the religion he brought. What words can explain the consistency, the heroism and the absolute loyalty of the Sahaba to Allaah and His Messenger at this critical moment in the annals of Islamic history?
What was the psychological will power demonstrated by the Sahaba (may Allaah be pleased with them) in the face of imminent dangers and persecutions? What words can explain their unequaled submission to the dictates of Allaah and His messenger (peace be upon him). The Sahaba gave their pledge of allegiance to Islam, to listen and to obey both at the time when they were active and the time when they were inactive, at the time of ease and also at the time of difficulty.
Can anyone visualize the calamities the Sahaba (may Allaah be pleased with them) endured for this Religion and the subsequent victory they achieved due to the help of Allaah that was decreed for them? None can isolate the vital role played by the Sahaba in liberating humanity from the paganism of conscience. The Sahaba were selected by Allaah Exalted be He, to bring victory to Islam and today I am Abdullah and you are Muhammad and She is Fatimah.
In the hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:“When a person sits in the company of the pious he will never be deprived of good” What words can then encapsulate the honor and the fortune of the Sahabah that did not only sit in the company of the pious but sat in the company of the leader of the pious ones, Muhammad (peace be upon him)?
Humanity has never witnessed the likes of the Sahabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) and never will it. Their lives have been subjected to microscopic scrutiny and investigation, yet the more any investigator digs sincerely into their lives the nobler he finds them to be. They are simply unequaled in human history. They adhered to the truth the like of which defies comparison, their loyalty to the prophet (peace be upon him) and the religion of Islam was divinely inspired otherwise no human effort can bring such loyalty to the table.
Allaah Exalted be He, in confirming the legitimacy of the companionship of the Sahabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) says: “So those who emigrated and were driven out of their homes, who suffered in My cause, who fight and were slain-Verily, I will expiate from them their evil deeds and admit them into gardens under which rivers flow (in paradise); a reward from Allaah, and with Allaah is the best of rewards.” Qur’an 3: 195. Yet again, Allaah by His Own Excellent Admission says: He is pleased with them, in reference to Qur’an 9:100 quoted above.
Ibn Qayyim said: “The greatest feather in the cap of the Sahabah is not in Allaah’s statement that they are pleased with Allaah but in Allaah’s statement that HE IS PLEASED WITH THEM.” In Qur’an 27: 59 Allaah says: “Say: “Praise and thanks be to Allaah, and peace be on His servants whom He has chosen! “ Sufyan Ath-Thawri and As-Suddi said: it is the Sahabah that are being referred to here. (Ibn Katheer).
Safe to say that, the Sahabah accepted Islam in an atmosphere of hostility and terrifying horror. They simply dared death itself. They defined manhood, MEN! Rijaal. Where does this leave the Muslims of 21st century? When the world rejected the Message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon) it was this handful of Sahabah that defied the custom of their nation and accepted the Message bearing all the consequences. The Sahabah could leave behind their homes, wealth and establishments just to be helpers of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Today we cannot because of Allaah, exit haram chat rooms or even drop that candy that has haram content in it or shun that business which is shady in nature, yet amongst this Ummah (nation) are a people who insult the Sahabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) the raafidis (shiites). The Sahabah loved the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) to such an extent that they secured his happiness before theirs. Today the Ummah (Muslims) please their lusts before anything.
The Sahabah undoubtedly were a nation that graced the era of Qur’anic revelation, they witnessed the revelation of Qur’an. They heard it being recited from the sonorous, perfect and melodious voice of the Prophet (peace be upon him). When they faced challenges, Allaah brought down revelation to rescue them. What an honor this must have been for them. They were simply the unique Qur’anic generation. Today when we have problems we rush to our parents or friends or tutors for advice but the Sahabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) had the Prophet (peace be upon him) to run to.
Subhanallaah (All perfections are for Allaah)! Who were these Sahabah? what was their psychological make up, what was their mental will power and their unwavering submission?
AbuBakr bin Abi Quhafah (may Allaah be pleased with him) was beaten to unconsciousness in defense of Prophet Muhammad and Islam, yet when he gained consciousness the first thing he said was: Where is the Messenger of Allaah? He was more concerned about the safety of the Prophet than his own safety. Can anyone beat this? In this nation and also in the previous ones, none is better than AbuBakr except the Prophets.
In the narration of al-Bukhari and Muslim the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked by ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allaah be pleased with him), “Which of the people is dearest to you?” He said, “ Aisha.” I said, “Who among men?” He said, “Her father (AbuBakr).” I said, “Then who?” He said, “Then ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab,” and he mentioned some other men.
Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allaah be pleased with him) was stabbed by Abu Lu’lu’ah when he was leading the Muslims in Fajr, yet wen he gained consciousness he asked: “Did the Muslims complete their salat?
I sob profusely and I cried to Allaah and I said “Ya Allaah, who was ‘Umar, what was the Eeman (Faith) of ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him)!
Uthman bin Affan (may Allaah be pleased with him) was stabbed while reciting the Qur’an. What an enviable end, what an honor. Yet we fall short in protecting their honor in the midst of blatant accusations leveled against them.
Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allaah be pleased with him) was killed also while praying. The price they paid for supporting the Prophet (peace be upon him) and for upholding the standard of Tauheed was with their blood.
When they were alive it was the Prophet (peace be upon him) flanked by AbuBakr and Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them), after death they are still together in the house of my and your mother Aisha (may Allaah be pleased with her).
What was the calibre of the mentorship and the quality of the message of the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) that Khaleed bin Waleed could turn from being a hostile rival to the “Sword of Allaah”?
Is it after the effort exerted by the Sahaba (may Allaah be pleased with them) by the virtue of which you and I can lay claim to Islam today that some deviants now choose to insult them?
The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: “Whoever abuses my Companions, upon them is the curse of Allaah, the angels and all the people” [Tabaranee].
Sufyan ibn `Uyainah said: “He who speaks a single word against the Companions of Allaah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) then he is an innovator.”
Imam Ahmad said: “If you see anyone speaking ill of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah, doubt his Islam.”
Adh-Dhahabee said, “Anyone who criticizes the Sahaba or insults them has gone out of this religion and has segregated himself from the Muslim Ummah.
In al-Kabaa’ir, adh-Dhahabee also said, “The one who loves the Prophet loves and respects each and all of his Companions. To hate any of them is to hate the Prophet.” Where does this leave those that antagonize Mu’awiyyah (may Allaah be pleased with him?
A man said to al-Mu`afa ibn `Imran, “Where is Mu`awiya in relation to `Umar ibn `Abd al-`Aziz?” He got angry and said: “One does not compare anyone with the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace! Mu`awiya was his companion, his brother-in-law (being the brother of Umm Habiba the Mother of the Believers), his scribe, and one who was entrusted with the revelation of Allaah!”
Imam Al-Nawawi said in Sharh Sahih Muslim: “Know that to insult the sahaba is haram, and one of the fawahish al-muharramat (grave major indecencies).”
Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him): “Allaah chose my Companions over everything else in existence.” Musnad of Bazzar classified as hasan.
Abdullah Ibn Mubarak said: “There are two qualities which are the cause of salvation for whoever has them: truthfulness and love for the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him).”
“Knowledge is what comes from the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and whatever does not come from one of them is not knowledge.” Narrated by Ibn `Abd al-Barr in his Jami` bayan al-`ilm
Ayyub as-Sakhtiyani said: “Whoever loves AbuBakr has established the deen. Whoever loves `Umar has made the way clear. Whoever loves `Uthman has been illuminated by the light of Allaah. Whoever loves `Ali has taken hold of the firm handle. Whoever praises the Companions of Muhammad is free of hypocrisy. Whoever disparages any of them is an innovator opposing the Sunna and the right-acting Salaf. It is feared that none of his actions will rise to heaven until he loves them all and his heart is sound.”
“Those who come after them say: Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers, who preceded us in belief, and do not put rancor into our hearts against those who believe.” Qur’an 59:10
Brothers and sisters in Islam, whenever you surf through any internet site or flip through the pages of any book or hears anyone insulting any of the Sahabah of the messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him), leave that site, close that book and block your hears to save your Eeman.
Learn, learn and learn about the Sahaba. Study Siyaru “alami-n-Nubala of Hafidh Shamsuddeen Adh-Dhabi, study al-Bidaya wa-n-Nihaya of ibn Katheer, study Hayatu-s-Sahabah of Shaykh Muhammad Yusuf Kandhelvi (RA), study Suwarun min hayaatis Sahabah of Dr. AbdurRahman Raafata Al-Basha.
Allaah is my witness that I have related part of the best of what I know about the Companions of His Messenger (peace be upon him). We have no excuse to insult them but have all reasons to love and respect them.
Those who will come after us will be better than us (regarding protecting the honor of the Sahabah) or worse than us (by keeping silent in the midst of vituperative comments on the Sahabah) because of us.”
