The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared the abolishment of Almajiri system of education, saying his government will no longer tolerate to see Almajiris roaming the streets in the state.

The governor made the declaration at a routine media briefing on COVID-19, held at the government house on Wednesday.

According to him, the issue of Almajiris has become a topic of national discourse and a source of mockery from the southern part of Nigeria.

He stated that all the Almajiri kids repatriated to Kano would be enrolled in the free and compulsory education system in the state after the government reunite them with their respective parents.

Mr Ganduje however maintained that any person willing to operate the Almajiri school must follow the formal way of education in Nigeria.

According to him, “anybody wants to operate Almajiri system of education must register with government. He must provide classes, shelter and feeding of the pupils.

“He must employ qualified teachers to teach in the school and must incorporate western education subjects in the curriculum of the school.

“Any attempt to operate Almajiri school in Kano must be in conformity with the formal education system of the country,” Mr Ganduje stated.
