Residents of Oteri Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State at the weekend fled their homes, following the continued gas leakage that unsettled the community.

The leakage of the gas station located on Oteri Ovwor Road, reports said, had sparked off the company’s fire alarm system during the weekend, while customers were being attended to.

The situation forced the workers to put on hold every business of the day and invited men of the Delta State Fire Service, Ughelli office who responded immediately to forestall any fire outbreak.

Mohammad Suru, a staff of the gas company who spoke to journalists on Sunday in the area, said the leakage was caused by a tanker driver who mistakenly left the control tap of the tanker unlocked after he had completed sales and the hose already detached from the tank, resulting in the leakage.

“As a result, customers who were here started running for safety, and immediately the leakage was noticed, men of the state fire service, Ughelli Office were called to put the situation under total control,” he said.

Some residents of the community who spoke to Journalists on condition of anonymity described the situation as threatening, adding that they fled their homes for fear of the unknown, especially when it was clear that there was a leakage.

Although normalcy has reportedly been restored in the community, but the fear of the unknown had kept many of the residents running from their homes.
