Jigawa Government says it has purchased varieties of seeds worth N110.98 million for distribution to farmers affected by flood disaster in some local government areas of the state.
Muhammad Lana, General Manager of Jigawa Agricultural Supply Company, JASCO, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Dutse on Monday that the gesture would enable the affected farmers engage in dry season farming.
Lana said that the seeds were the early maturing varieties for maize, cowpea, tomatoes and water melon, among others, just as he stated that agro chemicals were also among the items purchased.
He explained that the items were procured through JASCO, adding that farmers in 11 local government areas were affected by flooding in the state this year.
The Director said the state government sympathized with the affected farmers in view of the level of destruction of their crops, with most of them (farmers) losing everything.
He explained that the wisdom in the gesture was the possibility of the farmers recouping their losses through dry season farming.
