Gov. Yusuf awards N8.5bn erosion control contracts in 2 Kano communities

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano has awarded a contract worth ₦8,497,595,290.00 for the control of gully erosion at Bulbula and Gayawa communities in Ungogo and Nassarawa local government areas of the state.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the two towns have for long suffered devastating impact of erosion without government interventions.

Speaking after signing of the contract in Kano on Wednesday, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, Commissioner, Ministry of Environment & Climate Change, disclosed that the the contract had been awarded to Habib Engineering at a cost of ₦8,497,595,290.00, with an execution period of 715 days.

Mr Hashim, who doubles as Chairman, State Steering Committee, ACReSAL Kano said the project was bold step towards securing the lives and livelihoods of the people of Bulbula and Gayawa affected by gully erosion for years.

“For years, the people of Bulbula and Gayawa have suffered the devastating impact of erosion—lives lost, properties destroyed, and schoolchildren forced to navigate dangerous paths just to access education.

“This project is a direct response to the cries of the people, made possible by the unwavering commitment of our Governor to delivering people-oriented projects that truly transform communities.

“Many believed that this project was not feasible, but under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s leadership, we refused to accept impossibilities.

“Today, we are delivering on his mandate to make Kano a safer, more resilient state. This is not just an infrastructure project; it is a lifesaving intervention and a historic win for the people of Bulbula and Gayawa.

“Awarding this contract in the blessed month of Ramadan reminds us of the importance of sincere intentions. If we dedicate ourselves to the well-being of our people, we can use projects like this to seek Allah’s guidance and blessings.

“To ensure quality execution, I have directed that a strong monitoring team be put in place. Furthermore, I assure the affected communities that the State Executive Council will approve the necessary compensation for those impacted by this development.

“This project is a testament to the New Kano Vision—a vision of progress, inclusivity, and unwavering commitment to the people. We remain dedicated to advancing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s mission of building a better Kano for all.

“The contract for this vital project has been awarded to Habib Engineering at a cost of ₦8,497,595,290.00, with an execution period of 715 days,” he said.
