In a twist of irony, the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has honored ACP Daniel Amah, a police officer who rejected $200,000 bribe.
In October 2018, DAILY NIGERIAN had exclusively published videos showing Mr Ganduje collecting bundles of dollars, widely believed to be proceeds of corruption from a contractor.
Mr Ganduje, who was widely condemned for the act, dragged DAILY NIGERIAN and its publisher, Jaafar Jaafar, to court for defamation and later granted interview to BBC, threatening to “deal with” the journalist.
But in a letter of commendation on Monday, Mr Ganduje extolled the newly promoted officer, saying that the exemplary and impeccable pedigree of curtailing corruption he demonstrated “further testified that people of integrity are not far fetched in the force.”
The letter, signed by the governor and presented to Mr Amah by the newly deployed Kano state Commissioner of Police, Mohammad Dauda, described the gesture as ”a singular act of uprightness and rectitude that led to the eventual apprehension and prosecution of Ali Zaki and other criminal gang.
“You are indeed an absolute gem for accomplishing this outstanding dedication and exhibition of sound professionalism.
“I join people of good will to commend and urge you to uphold this priceless character in your career,” Mr Ganduje said.
Mr Amah was recently honoured with the 2022 Public Service Integrity Award by President Muhammadu Buhari, during the 4th National Summit on Diminishing Corruption in the Public Sector.
The event was organised by the Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
