Lagos State Masters Cup competition
Defending champions of the Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank) Lagos State Masters Cup competition, Greensprings Schools, Lekki and Queens College, Yaba at the weekend qualified for the semifinal stage of the Season Six of the tournament.
The Greensprings boys in the match played at the Onikan Stadium defeated hard-fighting Eko Boys High School, Mushin 4-2 on penalties. The game, which ended 1-1 at regulation time, saw the Lekki boys scoring four of their goals, while the 2014 champions only managed to score two of their spot kicks to bow out of the competition.
Other results of the males’ encounters include the qualification of 2012 and 2013 champions, Anwar-Ul-Islam College, Agege, who humbled Kings College, Lagos 1-0.
Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri defeated 2015 champions, St. Gregory’s College, Ikoyi 5-3 on penalties, after a 2-2 result at regulation time. The 2015 runners up, St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka, whitewashed International School Lagos, Akoka, 5-0 to book a place into the next stage of the competition.
In the girls’ cadre, Queens College beat International School Lagos, Akoka 3-0, as Greensprings Schools, Lekki defeated Methodist Girls High School, Yaba 2-0, while 2013 champions, Ansar Ud Deen Girls High School, Itire, humiliated Dowen College, Lekki 8-0.
Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo beat Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri 3-1 on penalties after 0-0 at regulation time.Commenting on the competition, the Managing Director of GTBank Plc, Mr. Segun Agbaje said the programme was aimed at giving youths the opportunity to cultivate their sporting talents.
“We are proud to lead this initiative that provides an avenue for students to showcase their talents and passion for the game of football, even as they remain committed to their academics.
“This competition paves the way for youths to cultivate their sporting talents and aptitudes, while fostering and building a healthier lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives,” he said.
