Angry tanker drivers have blocked Kano-Zaria highway over alleged assault by personnel of Kano Road Transportation Agency, KAROTA.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the articulated vehicle drivers blocked the highway on Wednesday evening at Kwanar Dawaki area, about 20 kilometers away from the Kano city.
It was gathered that the blockage forced people to embark on trekking to avoid passing the night at the point.
One of the drivers, Mohammed Baba, said the protest started when some personnel of the agency accused one of the tanker drivers of blocking the highway after having a flat tyre.
Mr Baba said the KAROTA officials then seized the battery of the vehicle around 5pm to stop the vehicle from running away.
“The driver had a flat tyre, then he stopped to change a tyre. It was around 5 pm. As he was changing the tyre, in fact, he had finished changing it, some KAROTA officers came and started shouting at him the he blocked the way.
“The driver tried to show them that he had not blocked the way, but they didn’t listen to him. They just removed his battery.
“We also heard that they removed another battery before that one. This is what prompted us to stage a protest by blocking the road in order to stop this assault,” Mr Baba said.
One of the motorists, Rabiu Sadauki, lamented that the road blockage had affected many vehicles, while others heading to Kano abandoned their vehicles to trek out of the gridlock.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the seized batteries were later returned to the owners, following the intervention of the divisional police officer in the area, but the drivers, nevertheless, refused to open the road.
When contacted, the spokesman for KAROTA, Nabulusi Abubakar, said the management of the agency were currently holding an emergency meeting in order to resolve the matter.
