Group condemns attack on Kaduna journalists, demands probe

The Media for Development Initiative, MDINigeria, has condemned the attack on journalists in Kaduna state by some “hired” thugs on Sunday.

Journalists covering a planned Press Conference by the two senators, Shehu Sani and Sulaiman Hunkuyi came under attacks from an unidentified thugs, leading to serious injuries and vandalism of vehicles.

The group said in a statement by its Team Leader, Ahmed Maiyaki that “the attack on Journalists at Kaduna Press Centre remains condemned and unacceptable. It is an assault and attack on journalism.

“We demand an immediate investigations into the matter and prosecution of culprits and their sponsors by relevant security agencies,” Mr Maiyaki said.

The leader of the team then cautioned that “politicians should not use the media centre as platforms for their dirty and brutal exchanges”

It then advised journalists not to be dragged into politics, saying “as professionals, journalists must resist attempts by politicians to use them as tools in their desperate struggles to hold on or ride to power.

“As watchdogs of the society, we should not be distracted from monitoring leaders and lawmakers alike in discharging their constitutional responsibilities towards addressing the myriads of challenges facing the common man.”
