A gynecologist, Dr Prosper Igboeli, on Monday noted that the number of available gynecologists to cater for women in the country are grossly inadequate.

Mr Igboeli, who is the Managing Director of M and M Hospital, Fertility and IVF Centre, Abuja, told newsmen in Abuja that a concentration of gynecologists are found in the big cities where only about 30 per cent of the population live.

He said that such situation left rural women with no highly skilled care providers, hence the higher mortality in those underserved areas.

“Such can only be described as daunting with totally inadequate infrastructure, equipment, support system, and weak career progression.

“On women infertility, lots of negative habits predispose women to infertility such as pelvic inflammatory disease that can cause blockage of the tubes and scarring of the womb.

“Multiple abortions, especially, when performed in non-sterile environment or by quacks can also destroy the womb,” Mr Igboeli said.

He noted that multiple births were on the increase the world over, primarily because of new technology, IVF, and superovulation drugs.

The doctor said that there were lots of improved conditions currently existing in many birth centres and hospitals for the care of premature multiples.

According to him, women die from childbirth complications including bleeding and surgery.

”They also die from medical conditions such as cancer, poorly controlled diabetes and hypertension.

The expert said that the country needed more gynecologists to address the issues of maternal mortality.
