A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, has explained how he shared N950 million campaign funds for Kano State in the buildup to the general election.

Wali was arrested on Thursday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of receiving slush funds originally meant for arms purchase.

Speaking on a local radio programme monitored in Kano after his release, the former minister admitted receiving the campaign fund, being the head of a seven-man committee for Kano State.

According to him, the money was shared among members of the seven-man committee of party, including former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, in whose residence the money was shared.

The committee included former Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau; Senators Bashir Lado and Bello Hayatu; Kano State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Rabi’u Dansharu and Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Coordinator, Mansur Ahmad.

Wali however said he did not benefit personally from the campaign funds, saying he only collected the money from Abuja because he was the most senior in the committee.

The former minister said he was only invited and freed by the EFCC after explaining what he knew about the money.

Shekarau is expected to appear before the EFCC this week to explain his role in the sharing of the N950 million campaign funds.

On Thursday, the EFCC grilled Wali and ex-Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed.
