TRIED: Justice Sylvester Ngwuta

A witness, Nwamba Chukwuebuka, has told an Abuja Federal High Court how embattled Supreme Court Justice, Sylvester Ngwuta, paid him N313m for the construction of three sets of houses within nine months.

Fielding questions from the lead prosecuting counsel, Charles Adeogun-Philips, on Wednesday, Mr. Chukwuebuka, a building contractor, said the houses were built in the Abakaliki and Onicha areas of Ebonyi State.

Mr. Ngwuta is an indigene of Ebonyi State.

The witness said his construction company, Base4 Services Limited, was engaged by Justice Ngwuta to build the three sets of property.

The witness said the three building projects were quoted to worth N405m, out of which Mr. Ngwuta paid the sum of N313m in September 2016.

The witness said while N30m out of the total N313m was paid to him via bank transfer, the balance (of N283m) was paid to him by Mr. Ngwuta in cash in both naira and dollar currencies.

He said the first project was worth N130m, the second N165m and the third N110m, totalling N405m.

The trial judge, John Tsoho, adjourned the matter till February 9 for the cross-examination of the witness by defence lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN).
