Hoodlums have invaded Yalwa Model Primary School in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State, stealing valuable items worth millions of naira.
Narrating the incidents to journalists on Monday in Kano, the headmaster of the school, Umar Aliyu, said the miscreants took advantage of a short perimeter fence to gain access to the school.
Mr Aliyu said the hoodlums stole two water pumps valued at N500,000 each, which were installed by a Non-governmental Organizations to provide water to the school.
According to the headmaster, the hoodlums also removed coiled wires of a SUMEC 300 generator and fled.
“Just last Friday, the hoodlums scaled the fence and gained access to my office through the ceiling.
“When they didn’t get something to steal, they removed all the cable wiring in my office.
They also entered our computer room through the ceiling and took away valuable items there.
“They then proceeded to steal our generator, but because it is big and heavy, we assumed, that is why they could not carry it but removed all the coiled wires in it.
“This happened in quick succession. Since my coming here as a head teacher, we have recorded five incidents of theft,” Mr Aliyu lamented.
He lamented that the school lacks adequate security guards, saying that the ones available are all aged.
Mr Aliyu, therefore, called on the state government to provide security in the school.
He also appealed to the state government to provide more toilets, saying that the school uses only two for its 1,164 pupils.
According to him, the school also needs furniture as virtually all the pupils take lessons on bare floor.
The headmaster also appealed to the government to increase the number of teachers in the school as there are currently 15 of them, which according to him, are not enough for over 1, 100 pupils.
“The government is doing its best but I believe it inherited the plethora of problems in the education sector and I believe that with this kind of information, the government would do the needful,” he noted.
