The Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Centre, HRCRC, said that respect for human rights is low in Ebonyi and the country at large.
George Etemaso, Director of the centre, disclosed this during a road walk to commemorate the 2021 World International Human Rights Day on Friday in Abakaliki.
The day is observed every Dec 10, to raise awareness about the rights that all human beings are entitled to.
Mr Etemaso said that the 2021 event, with the theme: “Equality, Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights”, is apt following cases of abuses recorded across the country.
He said that people should be orientated and sensitised on their rights in work places, institutions, organisations and the society at large to end violation.
“Respect for human rights is very poor in the country. It is only found among individuals who are well to do and average people.
“Abuses and cases of human rights abuses are a result of Inequality,” Etemaso said.
Christopher Okorie, State Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, said its focus is to ensure an end to all inequalities based on gender, sex, religion and ethnicity among other abuses in the state.
Mr Okorie advised the public to report all human rights violations to the NHRC and say no to early child marriage, child labour, human trafficking, Female Genital Mutilation and sexual harassment.
