The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, has directed that relief materials be dispatched to the victims of the Borno IDP Campfire incident.
Recall that three persons, including an infant, were killed in a fire disaster on Tuesday that destroyed about 600 tents at IDPs camp in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The chairperson of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Yabawa Kolo, had disclosed that about 600 shelters that make up a household were burnt down in the two outbreaks that occurred on Tuesday.
According to her, about 3,600 IDPS were affected by the inferno.
Commiserating with the victims, the minister, in a statement signed on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Nura-Alkali, described the incident as unfortunate.
Mrs Umar-Farouq directed that the cause of the fire be investigated to forestall future occurrences.
She also advised that cooking inside the makeshift homes be discouraged.
The minister commended SEMA chairperson, Mrs Kolo and other SEMA officials who paid a prompt visit to the camp to sympathize with the victims.
