The Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba-Usman, has withdrawn the posting of Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police Aliyu Garba to Kano, following intense lobby by Governor Dave Umahi and traditional rulers of the state to retain him, DAILY NIGERIAN can report.
The IGP, instead, deployed the deputy commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos, Dauda Mamman, to take charge as the new Kano State Commissioner of Police.
In a signal with reference number TH.5361/FS/FHQ/ABJ/SUB.4/737 sent to police formations across the country on Tuesday, the IGP ordered the provisional posting of Mr Mamman to Kano State and Etim Oqua Efiom to Gombe State.
Mr Mamman, who once served as the deputy commissioner of police in charge of Operations at Zamfara Command, is said to be an upright police officer.
Background
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that senior police officers in the Kano State Police Command had cried out over CP Abubakar Lawal’s alleged corrupt practices, a situation that prompted the IGP to order discreet investigation into the allegations.
Sources familiar with the situation also said the IGP also personally interviewed some officers in the command, who confirmed the allegations against the CP.
According to inside sources, the CP, upon posting to Kano in August, reviewed all the “lucrative cases” in the command and transferred them to his office and also “taxed” strategic departments and divisions under the command on “huge weekly returns”.
This newspaper gathered that the IGP was angry with the CP’s antics and ordered his immediate posting to Ebonyi.
