Rescue teams continue to look for survivors after a tsunami struck coastal districts of Java and Sumatra, in Indonesia confirming at least 370 people dead.

The tsunami which was followed by a partial collapse of a volcano off the coast destroyed hundreds of homes, drowning many and crushing much more with timber and metal.

During a visit to the area, the nation’s president, Joko Widodo, urged disaster agencies to upgrade warning systems.

He reminded that the Krakatau volcano has triggered tsunamis many times on the island.

“When it first erupted in the 1880s waves killed tens of thousands of people,” he added.

It was gathered that Indonesia’s meteorological agency had said that further tsunamis are possible despite checks placed.

The incident has rendered it’s survivors homeless after a side of the mountain slid into the sea, pushing a wave towards the shore.

An eyewitness nearby said hundreds of survivors were cut off, lamenting over the survivors’ need for food and medicine.

Thousands of survivors fled the coast thus jamming roads that were already partially blocked with debris.
