IPOB: Arewa group urges youths to eschew violence

A nonprofit and nongovernmental organization, Arewa Development Support Initiative, ADSI, has called on Northern youths to continue to maintain the peace in view of current happenings in the country.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the call is coming on the heels of the recent violence unleashed against Northerners and their businesses by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in the south-eastern states of the country.

Issuing a statement on Sunday, the ADSI President, Khuraira Musa, urged Northern youths to keep a listening ear to the elders and leaders and avoid any involvement in any kind of violence in whatever guise or form.

The statement said: “On behalf of Arewa Development Support Initiative (ADSI), a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that believes the peaceful co-existence and progress of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, whose main vision and mandate is to see all Arewa citizens working together for the betterment of her region and Nigeria in general regardless of one’s religion, political affiliation, or tribal inclination.

“We, by this release are calling on all Arewa youths to continue maintaining the peace, exercising patience for the virtue they are noted for in view of current happenings in our country, Nigeria.

“Please keep a listening ear to our elders and leaders and duly follow the rule of law to avoid any involvement in any kind of violence in whatever guise or form.”

The group, therefore, called on the Federal Government to do everything within its powers to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians, saying that doing so is the sacred mandate of the Government.

“The best way for progress and prosperity in a democratic society is through peaceful dialogue and tolerance in the face of provocation. Violence can only breathe destruction and pains not progress,” the group added.
